Irish Print Awards 2009
Nicholson & Bass scoops top industry award
Belfast-based printers, Nicholson & Bass have been awarded the highest accolade in the Irish print industry, the Irish Printer ‘Print of the Year’ 2009.
The company’s winning entry was selected from 16 various categories in the country’s top awards ceremony for the print and packaging industry, both in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The winning entry, Thomas Ryan Oil Paintings, was selected from the books category which was sponsored by the Reprocentre Group.
The company, which has won 18 previous Irish Print Awards over the past 32 years, also claimed the accolade for the Heidelberg/Miller Group Sheetfed Colour Offset category.
Established in 1938, the company employs over 50 people and specialises in the niche market of printing fine art catalogues and books.
The Irish Print Awards, now in its 32nd year, was celebrated at a glamorous ceremony held in Dublin’s Four Seasons Hotel on Friday, November 20, 2009.
Irish Printer received hundreds of entries for the 2009 awards, with 36 companies making the final cut.
The awards, which are judged by independent experts in the print sector, are a key recognition of quality in the printing of newspapers, magazines, books and commercial print work.
Referring to the high-standard of entries submitted for the awards, Gráinne Burns, editor of Irish Printer, said that it was a wonderful testament to the quality produced by the Irish Print industry.
‘This year we were again astonished by the excellence in quality of print and design of each entry and these awards demonstrate the high-quality of work produced by Irish print companies all around the country. Given the current difficult trading conditions, it is also a testament to the industry that companies do not compromise on quality of printed material for their customers,’ she says.
The awards also recognise emerging talent within the print industry, with the Print Graduates of the Year and Print Media Apprentice of the Year.
‘The print industry has a leading industry standard apprenticeship programme in place, emphasising the investment and importance that the sector plays on educating and up-skilling those working in the sector,’ says Gráinne Burns, adding that there is an estimated 17,000 people currently employed in the print and packaging sector.
Following the success of the launch of the Print Manager of the Year award in 2008, a large number of entries were submitted this year with Alistair White from Chesapeake Carton Packaging winning the honours.
